Lovforslaget har til formål at forlænge den eksisterende lov om midlertidig opholdstilladelse til personer fordrevet fra Ukraine, som blev vedtaget i marts 2022. Lovforslaget lægger op til at forlænge opholdsgrundlaget for ukrainske flygtninge til den 17. marts 2026. Formålet med lovforslaget er at sikre fortsat beskyttelse og ophold for ukrainske flygtninge i Danmark samt at lette sagsbehandlingen ved at tillade Udlændingestyrelsen at forlænge opholdstilladelser af egen drift. Lovforslaget søger også at berostille asylsags­be­hand­lingen for personer med opholdstilladelse efter særloven for at undgå overbelastning af asylsystemet. Lovforslaget omfatter også forlængelse af midlertidige regler for fordrevne børn og unge fra Ukraine på Børne- og Un­der­vis­nings­min­is­ter­i­ets område. Loven foreslås at træde i kraft den 1. december 2024.
